Integrating HIV/AIDS issues as core business strategy

To promote action against HIV and spread awareness amongst corporates on their responsibility is in keeping with the Mission Goals of PiC for more businesses to be aware of their impact on the communities and understand the need for supporting and contributing to sustainable development initiatives. PiC recognises the need for a government and corporate joint initiative to combat this killer disease, which could seriously impact profitability across the supply chain as well as help the marginalized communities most affected by this disease.

PROJECT:

With 5.1 million infected people in India, HIV/AIDS is growing alarmingly and taking away the lives of many young people in their productive age. It is advancing more towards the poor and most marginalized communities. Studies show a global trend in the recent past of more women being infected by the virus. Focusing on the Indian Tea Sector, HIV/AIDS can pose as a greater threat if a proper action plan is not developed to prevent the epidemic. The tea industry is a labour intensive sector with a large number of women workers, so any detrimental effect of this life-threatening virus on the labour resources will hugely affect business opportunities. Though the vulnerability of HIV/AIDS has never been assessed with a business specific approach, a proactive intervention strategy will definitely spell out benefits in the long run.

Present Status :

PiC initiated separate discussions with Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA), TATA Tea and Institute for Plantation Agricultural and Rural Workers (IPARW) to brainstorm on the different risks and opportunities in developing a collaborative action plan with the partners.

The process is still in the very initial stage. For more information, please contact Pranjal Goswami (pranjalg@picindia.org)
