6.9 Companies association with CR instruments, norms and codes

Explanatory note: Among all sectors, MNCs were the most consistent (51%) in complying with global standards, norms on CR. Most companies (61%) reported not subscribing to any global instrument. The highest percentage of subscription to norms was seen in the auto and auto ancillary segment (65%) with banking and finance registering the lowest adherence at 17 percent. Awareness of industry self-regulation instruments (Caux Round Table Principles for Business, Ceres Principles and Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production Principles (WRAP)) was deplorably low with 96 to 98 percent claiming they had no knowledge of these initiatives. (The MNC base here at 20% though, was quite low). As regards civil regulation alignment, the majority (44%) was certified with ISO 14001. Comparing across sectors, MNCs reported the highest certification to ISO 14001 at 70 percent. Subscription to civil regulation norms in terms of adherence or certification was the highest among PSUs. Awareness of the variety of norms was again extremely poor with the majority (72 to 98%) possessing no knowledge of the same. The same trend was observed while analysing multilateral and national regulation trends. PSUs yet again registered the highest subscription across sectors. Expectedly, PSUs had the highest subscription to national norms (16% certified with SEBI Clause 49 and 14 % following the CII, UNDP Social Code).
